Analiza piosenki
Utwór skonstruowany bardzo podobnie do „Daft Punk Is Playing In My House” – coś na zasadzie gadających głów opowiadających w rytm funku i electro. Nie da się ukryć, że LCD Soundsystem zawsze potrafił nagrywać kompozycje, przy których nie sposób albo nie ruszać głową, albo tupać nogą. I „North American Scum” jest tego kolejnym świetnym przykładem.
Murphy w tekście niejako przedstawia manifest. Przez to, że LCD Soundsystem jest z Nowego Jorku, wokalista ma dość europejski akcent. To czasem spotykało się z mylnym twierdzeniem, że pochodzi z Anglii. Ale jasno tłumaczy – jesteśmy z Ameryki Północnej, a nie z Anglii jak niektórzy myślicie. Chcąc pokazać jasno różnicę między oboma narodami, nazywa siebie i zespół szumowinami.
W ogóle cały tekst ma na celu jasno pokazać, że są ze Stanów Zjednoczonych. Kapitalistycznego molocha, gdzie ludzie sami budują wszystko aż po grób, gdzie dzieci marzą tylko o tym, aby być sławnymi, gdzie Nowy Jork jest wspaniały, ale tak drogi, że nie stać cię na czynsz. A nie z kulturalnie starzejącej się Europy, która ma mimów i tematyczne magazyny. Murphy stara się na zasadzie kontrastów i specjalnie użytych wyolbrzymień pokazać także jak bardzo nie podoba mu się stereotypizacja jego narodu i kraju. Zwłaszcza przez Anglików, którzy kolonizowali przecież Amerykę. Gdzie jest miłość – pyta.
Z drugiej strony natomiast pokazuje jak inny jest Nowy Jork od reszty kraju. Jak bardzo kocha to miejsce, ale jednocześnie kocha cały swój kraj. Mimo że czasem grubi amerykańscy chrześcijanie (złośliwie użyte określenie Baptystów) chcą robić wszystkim pod górę.
