Analiza piosenki
Piosenka została napisana na potrzeby ścieżki dźwiękowej filmu „Her” w reżyserii Spike’a Jonze’a. Pojawia się tam pod tytułem „Morning Talk/Supersymmetry”. Równolegle zespół ukończył inną wersję, która znalazła się na płycie „Reflektor”.
Treść filmu może oczywiście być kluczem do interpretacji „Supersymmetry”. Spike Jonze opowiada o „relacji” pomiędzy protagonistą Theodorem Twombly a Samanthą, systemem operacyjnym obdarzonym sztuczną inteligencją i kobiecym głosem. Do natury Samanthy, która nie jest prawdziwą kobietą i nie posiada biologicznego ciała, mogą nawiązywać słowa „to nie jest tak samo, jak być żywym”.
Basista Tim Kingsbury powiedział w rozmowie z „The Sun”, że zespół chciał odłożyć tę kompozycję na bok, ale producent James Murphy nakłonił ich do jej ukończenia. „To był super wyluzowany, otwarty jam, dryfująca piosenka elektroniczna, ale on powiedział, że musimy pozostawić ją płycie”, wspomina muzyk.
