„Birthday Girl” to utwór pochodzący z czwartego pełnowymiarowego albumu studyjnego amerykańskiej piosenkarki i autorki tekstów Lizzo. Wydawnictwo zatytułowane „Special” ukazało się 15 lipca 2022 roku nakładem wytwórni Atlantic Records.

Krążek jest następcą wydanego w kwietniu 2019 roku, bardzo dobrze odebranego, albumu „Cuz I Love You.” Mówiąc o całym projekcie „Special”, w jednym z wywiadów Lizzo tłumaczyła: „To są piosenki o miłości. Niezależnie od tego, czy jest to miłość do samego/samej siebie, miłość do rodziny, miłość do przyjaciół, czy miłość do wybranka/wybranki, naprawdę wierzę, że miłość do samego siebie i do innych jest tym, czego ten świat potrzebuje, aby być lepszym miejscem.”

W rozmowie dla Apple Music, Lizzo wypowiedziała się na temat piosenki: „Zrobiłam to z Monsters & Strangerz i wszystko to wyszło z freestyle’u. Pomyślałam: 'Czy to twoje urodziny, dziewczyno? Bo wyglądasz jak prezent.’ Dosłownie myślę, że to freestyle. A oni powiedzieli: 'Whoa.’ Pamiętaj, że piosenka nie była o urodzinach. Myślałam, że to będzie jak pierwsza linijka pierwszego wersu, ale potem zaczęłam mówić o tym, jak fajni są moi przyjaciele i tak dalej. A oni powiedzieli: 'Nie, nie, to jest ta piosenka.'”

„Czułam się związana z początkowym konceptem piosenki, który miał uczcić moich przyjaciół i to, jak bardzo ich kocham i doceniam, ale potem zdałam sobie sprawę, że urodziny to symbolizują. Ale koncepcje nigdy tak naprawdę nie były dla mnie. Wydaje mi się, że wtedy kłamię. Zamiast tego po prostu uczciwie napisałam o tym, gdzie byłam przez ostatnie kilka lat i kim się stałam.”
