„Black And Blue Bird” to utwór opowiadający o przemijaniu i o strachu przed niemożliwym do uniknięcia upływem czasu. Matthews zdaje się pokazywać nam tutaj swoje podejście do życia i do nieuniknionej śmierci, wskazując na to że nie ma sensu w przejmowaniu się końcem podróży, skoro wciąż jeszcze jesteśmy na tym świecie i możemy z tego korzystać. Jesteśmy przecież tylko nieskończenie małym ułamkiem wszechświata, powinniśmy więc nabrać nieco perspektywy i nie traktować własnej egzystencji z taką niesamowitą powagą.
Wszyscy mamy swoje wzloty i upadki, wszyscy szukamy odpowiedzi na dręczące nas egzystencjalne pytania, ale musimy czasami po prostu nieco odpuścić, zatrzymać się i docenić sam fakt, że w tym bezkresnym kosmosie jest tu dla nas miejsce i możemy się nim cieszyć, nawet jeżeli mamy na to tylko krótką chwilę. Wszystko ma swój koniec i nie da się tego w żaden sposób przeskoczyć. Zamiast więc się tym zamartwiać nauczmy się czerpać radość z tego życia i wykorzystajmy dany nam czas tak dobrze, jak tylko potrafimy.
