„Strange and Unusual” to utwór pochodzący z wydanego 21 stycznia 2022 roku trzeciego albumu studyjnego LP Years & Years, zatytułowanego „Night Call.” Album jest następcą krążka zatytułowanego „Palo Santo” z 2018 roku. Jest to także pierwsze wydawnictwo od kiedy brytyjskie trio Years & Years oficjalnie ogłosiło swój rozpad i stało się solowym projektem wokalisty i autora tekstów Olly’ego Alexandra. Zespół ogłosił swój rozpad 18 marca 2021 roku.
Tak na temat omawianego utworu wypowiedział się Alexander: „Na pewnym etapie procesu twórczego chcesz po prostu stworzyć coś, co brzmi naprawdę inaczej niż wszystko, nad czym pracowałeś. Stąd wzięło się 'Strange and Unusual.’ To naprawdę przypominało mi muzykę, którą uwielbiałem dorastając, jak Zero 7 i Morcheeba. Nazywano mnie dziwnym i niezwykłym. Chciałem, żeby to było coś w stylu: 'To jest dziwne i niezwykłe, ale jest piękne.'”
Mówiąc o całym projekcie „Night Call”, Artysta zdradził: „Pisałem z fantastycznej przestrzeni, wbitej w te same cztery ściany. Chciałem czerpać jak najwięcej przyjemności z muzyki.” W innym wywiadzie Alexander przyznał: „Wrzuciłem tu wszystkie rzeczy, których mi brakowało, takie jak wychodzenie na imprezy, taniec, seks… [Włożyłem] to wszystko na płytę.
