Analiza piosenki
„Tommy the Cat”, podobnie jak wiele innych utworów Primusa, opowiada historię niezwykłej, wyimaginowanej, przedstawionej w zabawny sposób postaci. Nie wiemy, czy „Kocur Tom” jest faktycznie zwierzęciem, czy raczej człowiekiem, a cały tekst ma charakter metafory. Wiemy jednak, że był „prawdziwym cudem natury” i „niewiarygodną machiną łowiecką”. Co więcej, budził podziw na Alei O’Malley, uwodząc cudowną kotkę (kobietę?), zupełnie nieczułą na amory innych kotów-zalotników.
Piosenka rozpisana jest na dwa wokale. W pierwszej zwrotce słyszymy obszerne wprowadzenie do historii legendarnego kocura, wygłoszone głosem Lesa Claypoola. Następnie mikrofon przejmuje sam Tom, w którego roli wystąpił gościnnie Tom (nomen omen) Waits. Artysta nie cieszył się jeszcze wówczas dużą popularnością, zdobył jednak uznanie ze strony Claypoola, który często prezentował muzykę Waitsa znajomym.
Singiel cieszył się tak dużą popularnością wśród fanów Primusa, że w pewnym momencie Claypool zaczął zapowiadać inne piosenki mówiąc: „ta piosenka to nie jest „Tommy the Cat”.
