Większość z nas słyszała wyrażenie „kiedy świnie latają”, ale w innej części świata kolejne popularne powiedzenie brzmiało: „Jest bardziej prawdopodobne, że wąż będzie palił fajkę niż brazylijskie siły ekspedycyjne, będą szły na przód i walczyć”.
Jest to opowieść o 3 żołnierzach sił ekspedycyjnych, którzy dzielnie walczyli przeciwko znacznie większej sile, którą ich wrogowie zakopali razem ze słowami: „Oto spoczywa 3 brazylijskich bohaterów”.
Jest to odniesienie do walki wolnych żołnierzy brazylijskich, którzy nie poddali się siłom niemieckim. Tylko 3 mężczyzn żyło, ale nie poddali się i walczyli przez kolejne 3 godziny, tak jak cała armia, aż w końcu zostali zastrzeleni. Jeden z dowódców sił niemieckich rozpoznał ich odwagę.
