„The Banishment” to wyznanie człowieka, który całkowicie gardzi rzeczywistością, która go otacza. Nihilistyczny wydźwięk tego kawałka przebija się praktycznie przez każde zdanie, które pada z ust Tommy’ego. Przedstawia on świat jako pozbawione jakichkolwiek wartości bagno, w którym ludzie skazani są tylko i wyłącznie na cierpienie.
Nie ma sprawiedliwości, zasady są nieczytelne, a nawet, gdy się za nimi podąża to nie znaczy jeszcze, że dostaniemy za swe posłuszeństwo nagrodę. Losowość wszystkiego, co może się nam przytrafić sama w sobie jest przytłaczająca, nic więc dziwnego że koniec końców autor nie uważa tego świata za dobre miejsce.
