„To był ostatni napisany utwór na album. W styczniu tego roku kibicowałem Jamiemu Lawsonowi podczas jego trasy koncertowej po Wielkiej Brytanii u boku Lauren Aquiliny… to były dla mnie pierwsze koncerty po dwuletniej i krótkiej przerwie w trasie. Razem z Lauren mieliśmy napisać coś razem w lecie… nie byliśmy do końca pewni, do czego dążymy tego dnia, czy to piosenka dla Lauren, dla mnie, czy dla innego artysty.
Ale naszym celem było po prostu napisanie najlepszej piosenki, jaką mogliśmy. Utwór pojawił się szybko i lepiej pasował do mojego głosu… Bardzo się do niego przywiązałem. Kilka dni później miałem wykonać końcowe dogrywanie i miksy do albumu, a skończyło się na nagraniu fortepianu i wokalu do „What Did You Expect?” któregoś popołudnia pomiędzy kolejnymi ujęciami.
Pliki zostały przesłane do Aidana O’Briena (producenta / kompozytora), który rozpoczął tworzenie utworu. Jeśli chodzi o tekst, nie mogę przyznać się, że kryje się za liniami jakiś motyw i nie mogę też zaoferować żadnego bezpośredniego związku emocjonalnego. Partie wokalne zostały nagrane przez Roba Stevensona z A Silent Film w jego studio w Oxfordshire, a utwór został wyprodukowany przez Aidana. Jest to prawdopodobnie mój ulubiony utwór na nowym albumie”.
