„The Poet And The Muse” to kawałek napisany na potrzeby gry komputerowej „Alan Wake”. Autor przedstawia tutaj wydarzenia poprzedzające właściwą akcję tej produkcji, opowiadając nam tragiczną historię Toma Zane’a i jego ukochanej, Barbary. On był poetą, ona jego muzą, inspirującą go do tworzenia swoich dzieł i ich życie wydawało się sielanką do czasu, gdy trafili do Bright Falls.
Tak jak i główny bohater „Alana Wake” tak i ta para znalazła się pod wpływem „Mrocznej Obecności”, tajemniczego bytu zamieszkującego tamtejsze jezioro. Istota ta była w stanie zmieniać fikcję w rzeczywistość, chciała więc użyć twórczości Zane’a do tego, by wydostać się ze swojego podwodnego więzienia. W końcu Barbara została wciągnięta w głębiny, mając być karą dla Toma, coraz bardziej uświadamiającego sobie straszliwą tajemnicę kryjącą się w Bright Falls. Zdruzgotany poeta spróbował więc przywrócić swą ukochaną do życia za pomocą swych poematów, czym tylko zesłał na samego siebie zagładę.
Nie zdradzając wiele więcej z fabuły tej gry można jeszcze wspomnieć o tym, że refren jest niejako wskazówką co do tego, jak można pokonać siły ciemności, kierowane przez potworną istotę z jeziora. Nie ma co jednak wyjaśniać tego wszystkiego, bo przecież nikt nie lubi niepotrzebnych spojlerów. Znacznie lepiej będzie samemu zagrać w „Alana Wake’a”, samemu dowiadując się po kolei wszystkiego, o czym mowa w tym kawałku.
